Why do customers need a credit card to rent a car?

Credit cards are mandatory for the security deposit. This blocked amount is not deducted from the card unless there are charges added to a contract after the Hertz vehicle has been returned. For example, Salik (Toll) & traffic fines.

When will Hertz refund the blocked amount to a credit card?

The security deposit is not charged to the card so there is no actual refund from Hertz. However, it can take up to 29 days (or fewer, depending on the card provider or bank) for the block to be released. After that the customer can use the blocked amount again.

Will the return of security deposit be shown on the credit card statement?

Customers might get a message from their bank when the money is blocked. The blocked amount won’t be debited from the account. Customers will only see actual charges on their credit card statements.

What kind of driver's license is required to drive in the UAE, and does it have to be an International License?

UAE Resident Visa holders must have held a Valid UAE license for over a year. For visitors with a GCC passport, a valid GCC Country License is required. For other countries, a valid International Driving License is mandatory. For a list of countries whose visa holders can drive without an international license, please go to the Rental Requirements Section.

Is there a minimum age to rent a vehicle?

Yes, the renter must be at least 21 years old, and hold a valid driving license and credit card.

Do customers have to pay for parking in UAE?

Parking in UAE is readily available. Parking along the roadside is paid parking with parking meters installed. Parking charges vary by time of the day and parking zone. Customers need to check the parking zone they are using and pay the appropriate fee when parking their Hertz vehicle.

What about traffic violations?

We strongly urge all customers to follow the traffic regulations for their safety and to ensure that they adhere to the law.

The most common traffic fines reported in the country include:

Exceeding the speed limit
Failure to pay for parking
Poor lane discipline
Not following traffic signals
Failure to wear seat belts
Using a phone while driving

What happens if there's a breakdown or accident?

Hertz offers 24hr breakdown and roadside assistance with all rental packages. If a vehicle is involved in an accident, the car should not be moved, unless the damage is minor and the vehicle is causing an obstruction.

The customer should call the police (999) and stay with the vehicle, provided it is safe to do so. A police report will have to be submitted to Hertz, so we can make an Insurance claim. Please note that insurance cover is void if a valid police report is not provided.

Please notify our 24hr toll-free number 800HERTZ of the incident. They will provide arrange for a replacement vehicle to be provided, should it be required.

Can a Hertz car be used for towing a trailer or caravan?

No. Towing is a violation of the rental agreement and is not permitted under any circumstances.

Can anyone other than the named driver on the agreement drive the car?

Yes, an additional driver can be added for a minimal charge. Inform our counter staff at the time of the rental and make sure that the extra driver has a passport and valid driving license.

How can customers locate the nearest Hertz office?

The nearest Hertz office can be located in the “Locations” tab section of the website. Select “Locations” and choose the destination from the pop-up window that appears. Alternatively, call our 24-hour helpline on 800HERTZ.

Can customers pick up the vehicle at one location and drop it off at any other?

Yes, cars can be dropped off at any Hertz location within the UAE. Customers might need to pay a minimum Drop-Off charge if they are terminating the contract at an airport.

What happens if the car is returned late?

A 29-minute grace period is provided on every Hertz rental. Any further extensions will amount to an additional day’s charge. Customers who suspect that they might be delayed in returning their vehicle should contact the branch or our toll-free number straight away.

Can Hertz vehicles be driven off road?

No. Off-road use is a violation of the rental agreement and is strictly forbidden.

Is this possible to extend the rental period beyond the initial booking?

Absolutely. Rental extensions made any time during rental. Contact the pick-up location or call the toll-free helpline on 800HERTZ

If a customer has full insurance (SCDW), do they still need a police report if the vehicle is damaged?

For any insurance coverage to be applied to a rental agreement, a valid police report is mandatory. Customers need to opt for SCDW at the time of booking or at the time of vehicle pick-up. It cannot be added during the rental.

Can customers drive to Oman or Saudi Arabia in a Hertz vehicle from UAE?

Hertz UAE generally does not allow its vehicles being driven to another country. Please contact us directly for any further enquiries.

Do Hertz need to be notified if a booking has been made but travel plans have changed?

Yes, please make sure that bookings are modified if travel plans change. Depending on our current rates, additional charges may apply. If the original vehicle pick-up schedule is altered or cancelled, please make sure that the booking is cancelled with adequate notice to avoid any cancellation or no-show penalties.

Is there a refund available for unused days on a rental agreement?

On daily and weekly rentals, there is no refund for unused days. On monthly rentals, if the customer has chosen to return before completion of the month, a refund will apply subject to the application of a shorter duration package.
