What to Consider When Choosing an Electric Car

Before you commit to a purchase, there are several factors you should compare:

Range: Look at the difference between claimed and real-world range. Most electric cars offer between 200km and 500km.
Charging Time: Some EVs can recharge to 80% in just 15 to 20 minutes using fast charging.
Battery Capacity: The energy stored in the battery packs determines how far you can go.
Maintenance: EV drivers save approximately 50% on maintenance because there are fewer moving parts; no oil changes or complex engine components.
Safety: Check for advanced safety features like lane keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.

Electric Car Range and Charging: What You Need to Know

Range anxiety is a common concern, but the UAE has one of the highest charging station-to-vehicle ratios in the world. You can charge your car at home using a standard AC outlet or a dedicated wall box. For longer trips, the charging infrastructure includes express public charging stations that charge at AED 1.20 per kWh.

It is important to remember that high speed and extreme heat can reduce your range. However, regenerative braking systems help by capturing energy to recharge the battery when you slow down. This makes city driving in stop-and-go traffic surprisingly efficient.

How Much Does It Cost to Own an Electric Car?

While the initial price of new electric cars can be higher than petrol cars, the running costs are significantly lower. For a closer look at the benefits of EV ownership, read our guide to the advantages of electric cars in the UAE.

Electricity is much cheaper than fuel, and you will save a fortune on servicing. Electric motors are incredibly efficient, converting over 77% of electrical energy to the wheels, compared to about 12-30% for petrol engines.

Furthermore, the UAE government offers incentives like free parking in certain areas and exemptions from some registration fees. Over the life of the vehicle, these savings add up, making owning an EV a very smart choice for your financial stability.

Are Electric Cars Practical for Everyday Driving?

Absolutely. For the average daily commute in the UAE, an electric car is more than sufficient. With home charging being so affordable, you can wake up every morning with a "full tank." The charging infrastructure is expanding every day, with more charging points being added to malls, petrol stations, and public parking areas.

For long-distance travel, planning is key. Use apps to locate fast chargers along your route. Most modern EVs can add significant range in about 18 minutes, which is just enough time for a coffee break.

How to Choose the Best Electric Car

Think about your driving habits. If you mostly stay in the city, a small SUV or a compact sedan like the Nissan Leaf might be enough. If you frequently travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, look for a model with a long range and fast charging capabilities. Always check the warranty; most electric vehicle batteries are covered for 8 years or 160,000 km.
